How to tell this story is hard for anyone going through being diabetic. Thirty-one years ago I gave birth to the most beautiful little girl. She was the delight of my heart. However, I also gave birth to a disease called diabetes. I didn’t realize I was a diabetic until a few years later when what called was gestational diabetes developed into full blown diabetes. I can recall when my baby was small after eating I would go into a sleep or now I know a sugar high to almost make me comatose. I did go to the doctor to begin treating my diabetes. The first treatment was with Glucophage which I was allergic to and it was not a good treatment for me. The side effects were horrible. I changed doctors and he was an actual Jack A***. The third doctor was much better and I began having to inject insulin to control my blood sugar. If you’re thinking I should have seen a nutritionist, I can assure you I did. I saw at least three and I just followed the doctor the best I could. Do you ever look back and say to yourself. “I wish I knew yesterday what I know now?” That’s where I am today. The common test your doctor does about your diabetes is called an A1C blood test. This is checked every three to four months to determine an average reading. The reading you want is less than 6.7. The enemy of blood sugar is food. It seemed that no matter how hard I tried every three months I would be disappointed in my A1C and I would be let down. Diabetes affects people differently. It can cause cancer, neuropathy and losing your arms, hands or feet is possible. I got the cancer, survived it but I’m trying to keep my vision. When cancer came knocking I knew I had had enough and my eating needed the biggest overhaul. Stress is also an enemy of diabetes but hard to avoid.
My A1C would typically run 8.1 - 11 depending on the holiday in between doctor visits. It was when it was 8.1 I got serious enough to start my changes. I don’t want to take insulin injections was my new goal. I took advice from many places. YouTube to knock down my carbs and sugar and how to use intermittent fasting and my friend Graham Wardle to introduce celery juice. I’m mostly a vegetarian now. I have been serious in eliminating sugar and carbs. My weight has gone down greatly and checking my blood sugar in the mornings never goes over 80 anymore. My breakfast is carb free toast. fruit and coffee. I use monk fruit to sweeten things instead of sugar. I have a very controlled lunch and dinners that does not include potatoes. The units I am prescribed by my doctor is 40 units but all these changes I have made myself for my health I only need 28 units in the morning now. What has been happening is my body is using my own insulin properly. Sometimes we have to take the bull by the horns and do what seems impossible. My last A1C reading was 6.4 which means I’m in normal range. What I used to get here was my faith in God, investigating foods and how they affect me and the will power to succeed. I do eat out on occasion but the portions I eat are extremely small and I have learned what I should and should not eat. I’m going for my four months checkup Tuesday, but I tend to believe I’m doing great, and I will not have any more disappointments when I do.

That’s amazing Lucinda so proud of you and this help other people too. I’m type 2 2010 border line I change my way of eating habits as I am not compliant and I will not take the Metformin they prescribed. So far my A1C is been pretty much the same unless I have surgery it gets higher and they give me insulin for it. Mine the highest it get is 6.1
